More new for '02
Land Rover
(a British carmaker owned by Ford) is bringing it's
compact SUV, the Freelander (another European best seller) to
America. With all-wheel drive standard, 4-wheel electronic traction
control, and hill-descent control, this vehicle can handle most off-road
excursions despite its smaller size. It is not built on a car chassis, but is a real Land Rover
having a unibody chassis with integrated cross rails like it full sized
brothers. This model has been around since 1997 in Europe and
becomes the third model introduced into the U. S.
Jeep
the maker of the original SUV has introduced a new compact model
called 'Liberty' to replace the now discontinued Cherokee. It comes
in a 2WD and 4WD model with two editions, a Sport and Limited edition
for both. It has off-road capability found in most the line in Jeeps 60
year history It did not fare well in 40mph crash tests,
however, receiving an overall evaluation of marginal with some
possibility of head, neck and leg injuries according to the Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety.
Still more Luxury but with a practical
side
Cadillac
has come out with an all new "sport utility
truck" based on the Chevrolet Avalanche but with more style, the
Escalade EXT. You can create a bigger pickup bed, or configure it to
carry people in the backseat with its convertible "midgate".
The Escalade EXT blends a 345-hp engine and All-Wheel Drive in a sport
luxury/truck vehicle you can take for a ride in the country and then a
night on the town.
